MSE 5090: Case Studies in Material Selection

Week 4 - Material Property Charts

Read this entire document before starting the assignments.

      1. Objectives
      2. Reading assignment
      3. Discussion questions
      4. Week 4 assignments:  Ashby ProblemsCMS Problems  Case Study Background
      5. Reference Material

      Objectives:
Use CMS software to create a chart showing ranges of properties
Plot a performance index on a materials selection chart
Plot a constraint on the materials selection chart
Model the static mechanical behavior of a material in a given application
Acquire the background needed to begin Case Study
The main objectives for this week are to learn the CMS software and understand materials selection charts and how they are used. The selection charts are screening tools which indicate which types of materials can be used in a given application. The charts have large bold circles for whole classes of materials and less bold circles indicating the structural , processing and compositional variations in properties within a given material.

Another objective for this week is to work through how to obtain background for the case study. Part of this involves tracking down relevant data, as was done in the week two assignment. Another part involves interviews with various participants in the real world case. To that end , we will begin reviewing the Aerospace Corp. Central Research Lab case that was handed out last week. Most of this case will be discussed next week. Finally , in order to have the background needed for your case study , we will need to discuss the role of process selection , since some of your cases will involve processes.

      Reading Assignment:
      ASM pages 266 - 280;
      Ashby pages 24 - 55 and 253 - 282

      Discussion Questions:
What is a materials selection chart?
How are performance indices plotted on materials selection chart?
How are the optimization criteria for a given application represented on a selection chart?
How is the materials background for a case study organized so that application charts can be used?

      Week 4 Assignments:

      Ashby  B 2.3, B 2.7, B 2.8, B 2.14 and B 2.18 (Due 9/30/98)
      Subject: Week 4 - Ashby B 2.3, 2.7, 2.8, 2.14 & 2.18

Cambridge Materials Selector problems for introducing the software (Due 9/30/98)

You may well note that you don't have all the background to do all the problems from scratch. I think you can solve these by following the directions given in the problem. The goal is to see how the software is used . You will learn any specific skills you don't have regarding these problems over the next few weeks.

Subject: Week 4 - CMS Problems
Problem 1  "Finding and printing data "
Problem 2  "Creating selection charts: bicycle forks"
Problem 3  "Plotting compound properties: storage heaters"
      Problem 4  "Specialized databases: busbars
      Problem 5  "Report writing

Doing these exercises will familiarize you with  certain aspects of the Cambridge Materials Selector. Later problems will use the newly updated process selection capabilities in this software.

Outline Case Study Detailed Background (Due 10/2/98)
Subject: Week 4 - Case Study Background
The outline should list what you have found as well as what you intend to find so that you can write the background needed for a classmate to understand the case study material. What is wanted is an outline of the Background section so you will know what you still need to find , and so you can focus and delimit your background information to the most relevant theory and information. Some reasonable background sections from earlier case studies are available for review.

The Koppi communication web page gives tips on organizing case studies from a corporate and even a marketing viewpoint. It has some useful tips , but you should be eclectic about this and recognize that there are some good ideas here but you don't want to reorganize your case study based on their suggestions.
