Work in teams of two to practice the art of asking incisive questions that generate genuinely valid responses. For a variety of reasons, often asking the direct question is not likely to produce the desired accurate information. One has to be more clever and indirect by asking questions that truly expose the answers to questions in a way that the client is less aware and less likely consciously to shape (spin) the response.
Choose an area in which you feel comfortably knowledgeable, and assume a scenario in which you have been retained by your teammate to provide some custom service in the area. Develop a collection of 6, say, revealing questions that will expose the information that your are really after perform the service optimally for the client. It may be helpful to record the dialogue for more accurate subsequent analysis.
Report the chosen area of expertise, the roles played by each team member, and the questions asked. Then assess how successful the probe served in eliciting the desired information. If a question was unsuccessful, develop a more penetratingly refined alternative formulation. Generally relate the exchanges in the overall experiment. Especially indicate any unexpected occurrences in the dialogues, and how they were remediated in follow up efforts.
Then reverse roles using another topic for discourse. Similarly report the experience.
