I find this visualization very creative because of the correlation between the speed and the pain index. Also the color of the bar perfectly catches the mood of the commuter. As many people pointed out, the background seems unnecessary and decreases the data to ink ratio with more or less no purpose.

There are couple of things which I find confusing,

1. The lower and upper bound of the pain index is not clear. At a first glance when I saw the mexico city value as 108, i inferred that it varies from 0-120. When I looked closely then I realized that there is no connection between the calibration in the speedometer and the pain index bar.

2. With the IBM logo on the speedometer, one can read "IBM commuter pain index" as a whole and get confused whether the participants in the survey were only IBM employees or all commuters in the city.
